What does participating in Destination Imagination really involve?
For the Parents:
- Commitment to the Team: This means rearranging your child’s schedule to accommodate the team schedule, bringing your child to EVERY team meeting (unless the child is sick)
- Supporting the Team Project: This means providing supplies, costumes, etc., working with your child’s team manager to help bring your child’s team’s solution to reality.
- Commitment to the Team: This means setting up clear expectations & schedules. conflict resolution arbitration (sometimes team members don’t agree), helping teach kids project management skills including project time management & problem solving strategies.
- Supporting the Team: This means NOT solving the problem for the kids, but helping guide the kids’ thinking towards possible solutions, ensuring other adults don’t problem solve for the kids, Positively encouraging children and ensuring all ideas are listened to.
- Commitment to the Team: This means coming to meetings on time, being prepared with items and/or ideas, being ready to do your part towards the team solution.
- Supporting the Team: Listening to others ideas, understanding that your idea may not be the one that the team goes with, willing to work with other team members to achieve a common goal.
How does DI work?
- There needs to be 4 - 7 kids interested in forming a team. Teams can be formed
- A parent needs to be willing to be the team manager.
(Training and support are provided by the district.) - The team reads about and selects one challenge to solve.
(Rising Stars teams (Grades 1-2) have only one challenge) - The team needs to register themselves and pay the required fees on the Texas DI website.
(Payment is made by KatyISD… Team managers only need to complete the registration process.) - The team selects and creates a solution and performance showcasing the solution.
- The team presents their performance and solution to the judges at the Gulf Coast Regional Tournament in February.
- For Competitive teams (Grades 3 -5):
Winners of the State Tournament advance to the Globals Tournament.
(Rising Stars teams do not advance to State Tournament)
